Indy farmers markets prepare for the start of summer season amid pandemic

Indianapolis farmers markets are gearing up for the start of another summer season, but opening days will look much different from years past.

Farmers’ markets are a critical ingredient to our local economy, food systems, and communities. However, there was a bit of a debate on whether or not farmers’ markets were deemed essential. On March 23, Indiana, Governor Eric J. Holcomb issued an executive order declaring farmers’ markets essential. The summer markets will be implementing new procedures to help protect vendors and customers from the spread of coronavirus.

Shoppers are being asked to wear masks and preorder from vendors, if possible. There will also be no dogs, eating or drinking allowed on-site and, of course, plenty of social distancing. Read on to see the markets that are opening this weekend, so you are prepared to shop safely.

If possible, children should remain at home. Restrooms and the market ATM are not available.
